Creating the Utopian Environment

"Self-Awareness—
the Hallmark of Utopia"

Hello Colleagues

Generally speaking, Emotional Intelligence is about all aspects of our relationship with ourselves (an interesting notion isn’t it) and our relationships with others.  Many of you have recently inquired about assessment of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), in response to our providing all participants in our upcoming workshops (conducted with John Lockwood from Coaching for Results) a comprehensive EQ assessment using the Bar-On Emotional Quotient inventory.  Details of the inventory are on my website.

The Bar-On EQ Inventory measures:

Intrapersonal EQ:  Self-regard, Emotional Self-awareness, Assertiveness, Independence, and Self-actualisation.

Interpersonal EQ:  Empathy, Social Responsibility, Interpersonal Relationship.

Adaptability:  Reality Testing, Flexibility, Problem Solving

Stress Management: Stress Tolerance, Impulse Control

General Mood:  Optimism, Happiness

While people delight in seeing their EQ strengths, the real challenge in completing an assessment like this is identifying the areas that need improving and then being able to talk about it and where the relationship behaviours that we have formed come from.

In an organization, recently, I had the pleasure of facilitating a group feedback session for the leadership team, all of whom were men except for one!  Each individual had the courage to discuss his EQ profile and to speak openly about his past and family patterns which may have shaped his emotional intelligence.  This type of group experience is a powerful change agent.

There were times when some team members mirrored to others their own experience of the person in certain situations which may account for a particular subscale score.  This feedback was given without judgment and in an atmosphere of confidentiality.  The feedback was met without defensiveness by the individual but with curiosity about how that person affected others and how this could be improved.  I have immense respect for each of the participants in this group.  Being in such a potentially vulnerable situation takes enormous courage.

I believe the both individual awareness and the collective awareness of the group increased exponentially on that day.  The experience has built respect for and loyalty to each other, and learning strategies are now being developed for the group and the organization to move forward.

This is the creation of a truly Utopian environment in the workplace in the process.

A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost.  He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below.  He descended a bit more and shouted. “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend that I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.

The woman below replied, “You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground.  You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”

“You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist.

“I am” replied the woman, “How did you know?”

“Well” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is that I am still lost.  Frankly, you’ve not been much help so far.”

The woman below responded, “You must be in Management.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you are going.  You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air.  You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems.  The fact is that you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somewhere it’s my fault.”

“Let us not forget that a man can never get away from himself”

(Goethe, German poet, novelist and playwright)
