Creating the Utopian Environment

"Spiritual Intelligence
and Corporate Culture" (cont'd)

Hello Colleagues

During the last month I have had discussions with many of you about Spiritual Intelligence! I had no idea my introducing this concept in the last Bulletin would create such a flurry of discussion.

The following is a summary of the thoughts of some of you. Remember, I asked you to share with me how you were creating spirit in the workplace. I have quoted verbatim where I can remember. Some of the comments are very descriptive and gave rise to some deeper feelings:

  1. My boss hasn’t got a spiritual bone in his body.
  2. Our office is a real community. We sort of look out for each other. It’s not intrusive, just nice.
  3. We are big celebrators at work! We seem to celebrate everything.
  4. My organisation squeezes us out rather than juices us up.
  5. Spiritual intelligence in the workplace, what a joke, we’re too busy meeting budget or tying to.
  6. I am introducing meditation breaks into my organisation for staff at every level [I, CD, was asked to facilitate this and of course I said yes!]
  7. We are a Christian organisation and we have worship and prayer every day for all staff. Even those who aren’t Christians say they enjoy a peaceful start to the day.
  8. Religion has no place at work. Let’s keep it on the war zones.
  9. I cultivate my spiritual life at home. Work seems to stifle it but I’ll keep trying.
  10. You run the risk of too much naval gazing at work. The practical reality is that money makes the world go round.
  11. I did the spiritual intelligence test on our website and was quite surprised that I did reasonably well. I thought it was about religion but it isn’t really.
  12. I am getting you to do EQ assessments on all my staff. We need to work on relationships at every level.
  13. The research on Spiritual Intelligence is interesting. I wouldn’t have believed that but you’ve now got me interested in this whole area.
  14. Compassion in the workplace. Is this a joke?

These comments certainly highlight that some of you are trying to create spirit in the workplace, some are curious about this and some do not care for it. I’d like to suggest that if your place of work is not providing for your personal and relationship needs at some level, then be kind to yourself and find one that does or create your own. The allure of the Utopian vision in the workplace is dissatisfaction with the status quo. If you are interested in reading further in the area of creating spirit in the workplace then reading "Capturing the Heart of Leadership" (1997) by Gilbert W. Fairholm is a must.

Kind Regards,
